MANILA Tropical Depression Luis entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday morning, the state weather bureau reported.
As of 4 a.m. Friday, Luis, packed with maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph), was located at 1,050 kilometers (km) east of Virac, Catanduanes. It is forecast to move west northwest at 30 kph.
In an interview, weather forecaster Meno Mendoza said the tropical depression is expected to make landfall in Northern Luzon on Sunday evening or Monday morning.
Mendoza said Luis, the 12th cyclone to visit the country this year, is also expected to intensify into tropical storm category because it is still in the sea.
The weather disturbance will bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms over Visayas, Mindanao and Bicol Region on Friday.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country will continue to have partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies with possible rainshowers mostly in the afternoon or evening due to localized thunderstorms.
In its advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said moderate to occasionally strong winds blowing from the southwest to west will prevail over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to occasionally rough.
According to Pagasa, the country is visited by an average of 18 to 20 storms every year. (Sunnex/with PNA)
