We recently had the pleasure of joining Jerome Clementz and the Mavic crew for a few days of backcountry adventure in the Maritime Alps of Southern France. The main objective was to put the new Mavic Crossmax XL wheel-tire system through its paces on the burly trails of the Trans-Provence enduro stage race, but the ulterior motive was to have a blast ripping singletrack from the high-alpine snowline to the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. And that mission was certainly accomplished.
Here’s a video that Mavic produced on the journey, as well as a few more photo outtakes from the trail:
No true high-alpine adventure comes without its share of hike-a-bikes. They’re just another way to earn your turns.
Mavic’s new Crossmax XL wheels are designed to withstand the rigors of extended riding on demanding terrain. The fact that Mavic held its press launch on the technical trails of the Trans-Provence enduro stage race is a testament to the company’s faith in the new wheels. And they certainly held up over the course of our journey. We’ll be putting them through a longer-term test in the near future, so stay tuned for more feedback as we get some more quality trail time on them.
Reigning Enduro World Series Champion Jerome Clementz played an active role in the development and testing of the new Crossmax XL wheels. And he is not known for holding back while riding his bike.
The new wheels took us to many scenic overlooks, such as this cliffside view of an ancient mountaintop village. Mountain bikes sure can take you to some pretty bitchin’ places.
A couple dozen tight switchbacks leads into a roller-coaster descent.
Only a couple-hundred more steps to the beers.
Riding bikes through quaint French villages sure does beat the tour bus.
A quick espresso stop before descending our way to the sea.
