True Precision Stealth Poacher SS Hubs

A while back I received a set of 35mm wide Nextie carbon 29er rims and it’s time to build them into a solid wheel set. When it comes to hubs I’ve always gone for quality. For many years, my singlespeed hub of choice has always been Chris King. I’ve had a more budget type of wheelset with Hope Pro 2 hubs on my first 29er, a Niner One 9. More recently, Industry 9 hubs have made the centerpiece of my wheels. Both on my Neilpryde Alize road bike with i25 wheels as well as on my Volagi Viaje for which I picked up a pair of road disc Torch hubs. The Forty-Four Big Boy fat-bike uses Paul hubs with an Industry 9 freewheel.
From a technical perspective, quality as well as finish of the different hubs, I’d rate Chris King top, Industry 9 and Paul next, then Hope. The quality of workmanship on King hubs has always been unmatched. The internals of a hub are as clean as the polished outside. No one works like that except for the in MTB circles somewhat lesser known hub maker True Precision. I had never seen their hubs up close nor touched them, but a trained engineer’s eye can tell from photos. So rather than going with what I already know, the new wheel set will be built with a beautiful pair of True Precision Stealth Poacher singlespeed hubs. Now that I have a pair in my hands, I can confirm that some awfully precise machine work went into making these hubs. Everything’s smooth and has a wonderful finish. Great stuff all around.
Both front and rear are thru-axle, 15mm up front, 142x12 for the rear. While thru-axle front hubs are plentyful, thru-axle singlespeed hubs are quite rare. The freewheel uses a roller clutch, essentially a needle bearing turning only one way, and is therefore totally silent while offering instantaneous engagement. Two very intriguing features that sets the hub apart from everything else and two features I can’t wait to experience. Stay tuned for the finished wheel build.
